Overtone is Malik Osei — an electronic producer who spent a decade as a live sound tech before deciding the small room at home was the instrument he'd been ignoring.
The long way to a small room
Ten years of load-ins taught me what rooms do to sound — how a brick wall eats the low end, how a crowd changes a mix. I mixed other people's shows in five countries and came home every night to a bedroom full of borrowed gear, making sketches nobody heard.
Copper Room came out with no plan and found a few thousand people anyway. Night Bus was written on the actual night bus. By the time Distance in Static was finished, the spare room had opinions of its own — and the whole thing, tour included, still runs from there. No label, no manager, one room.
